To Identify prime numbers up to 20.

What is prime number in math?

A prime number is a whole number greater than 1 whose only factors are 1 and itself. A factor is a whole number that can be divided evenly into another number. The first few prime numbers are 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23 and 29. Numbers that have more than two factors are called composite numbers.
A practical afternoon of science, investigating different forces.

Today 5SJ have been making pulleys to pull our coal mine buckets up and designing and making coal mine carts
The children have been working on subtracting two mixed fraction numbers.

Year 5 had a fantastic trip to the National Coal Mining Museum on Friday
PC Geoff came into 5SJ today to discuss 'Online Bullying'
A successful afternoon building bridges
We welcomed back Mrs Javed and Mrs Johnston this week and got stuck into a range of learning. We started off our week by writing our own version of Grace's story from our English text 'Journey to Jo'burg'.
We edited and improved our writing so that we could showcase this on display in our classroom. We then used the images from the text to create our own drawings.
In science we have been learning about light. We have learnt about different sources of light and which of those sources are natural and man made. We investigated how light reflects and used opaque, transparent and translucent materials to test how light travels to, through and past these materials.
Reading is extremely important to us at Blakehill. We want the children to read a range of texts in order to aid their understanding and widen their vocabulary. In Year 5 the children have a different book to read at home and in school along with being exposed to different texts in their English and reading lessons. We also make time to read at the end of the school day and are currently enjoying reading Krindle Krax by Philip Ridley.
We used the iPads to reasearch about the solar system. We found out what the planets looked like and found interesting facts about them. Did you know: mercury is the hottest planet in the solar system.
In computing we were organising paper databases. We used information about animals to  classify and order them.
In English we are learning about writing instructions. Today we gave and followed instructions.
Continuing with our instruction topic, we have been reading and following a set of intructions. Mrs Johnston showed us a magic trick and we were mindblow!
Pupil Voice:
Emma - How did you do that?
Riley - That is so cool!
Archie - I've seen that before!
Jaxon - Wait a minute, are you holding the card at the bottom?

We then tried the card trick for ourselves using a set of instructions.

To help us with our spellings we have been working in pairs. we use a numbered sheet with spellings on that are numbered 1-5. We roll a dice and use the number it lands on to write that spelling into our book.
