Autumn Term

Reading

We love to read! We have drawn our favourite books to add to our reading area. We are sure you will l agree with us that it looks great! We can't wait to share and recommend our reads.
PHSE

5J discussed the importance of collaboration and teamwork. They worked in teams to identify the pros and cons of working together. The successful team managed to build a free standing tower (with the help of lots of Sellotape!)
Maths

We have started our maths journey in year 5 with learning about the place and value of numbers up to 1 million!
This can often be a tricky concept so we have used place value charts to support our learning.
Educational Wellbeing Team

We were visited by the Educational Wellbeing Team to discuss and teach us about managing our emotions. We worked on understanding ways in which we can support ourselves when things seem out of our control and learnt breathing techniques to help us.
Computing

We have been learning about systems. We discussed and ordered scenarios based on what happens when an order is placed up until the point it is delivered to a customer. We discussed in detail the journey a package takes until it is collected. We also looked at old catalogues and discussed how ordering and systems have changed over time.
Computing

Using the new QR codes to help us login with ease, we used the Chromebooks to search questions and investigate how many searches were revealed and how long this process took. We spent the lesson learning how to use specific vocabulary to make our searches useful to what we were looking for.
History

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to the National Coal Mining Museum. We should great knowledge of what we had already learnt in school about the jobs and dangers of the miners. By exploring the underground mines and the museum we learnt more about mining over time in Yorkshire.

Science

This term we have been learning about forces. We have learnt about friction, gravity, water resistance, air resistance and planned and investigated forces.
Here we are testing our shoes for friction on different surfaces. We then recorded and analysed our results.
RE

This term we are learning about Judaism. We kicked off the topic by learning about the important Jewish festivals and why they are celebrated. We recapped on prior learning of Judaism by matching topic words to definitions looking at key words such as:
Torah (the holy book)
Judaism (a religion that Jewish people (follow)
Menorah (candelabra used in the religious rituals)
Star of David (symbol of Judaism)
Science

To round off our forces topic in science, we took part in a quiz to test our learning. Well done to Dylan (1st place) Phoebe (2nd Place) and Elijah (3rd place)
The children did really well in retaining what they had learnt.

Autumn 2

Buckden Residential

What a way to kick off the start of term! The children headed out to Buckden House in North Yorkshire for a week out of fun and adventures away from home and school!
More pictures can be seen on our school Facebook page.
Geography - Field/map work

Upon returning to school, the children have spent time locating and observing their local area of Idle. We have used maps and Google Earth to virtually explore and identify changes within the area. We will now use this information to compare Idle to Buckden.
Meet the author - Jacqueline Wilson

As part of our reading lessons this week, we read and completed questions based on Jacqueline's latest story - Star of the Show. At the end of the week we joined Jacqueline Wilson for a live question and answer session where the children were able to fine out more about Jacqueline and ask her questions.
Meet the Athlete

The children were excited to meet Anthony Cotterill, who represented Great Britain at the Paralympic Games. Anthony is a wheelchair tennis player who shared his incredible story with the children and supported them through a fitness circuit.
Spanish

As part of European Languages Day, the children learnt about the history of bull fighting and why it is an important tradition in Spanish culture.
PHSE

This half term we have been focussing on the qualities of friendship. We used gestures to communicate but also to understand the importance of paying attention through eye contact and by listening.

Our objectives for this lesson were:
  • Rehearse active listening skills: PHSE
  • Demonstrate respectfulness in responding to others;
  • Respond appropriately to others
PHSE - Self Esteem Visit

The Educational Psychology team delivered a workshop on self esteem. The children took part in a range of activities and discussions.
Christmas Crafts

The countdown to Christmas has commenced! 5J prepared their decorations for their Christmas hoop which is displayed in the corridor alongside the other year groups. They can't wait to take these home and share them with their families.
