Summer Term

Summer Term
Welcome back to our final term in Reception! In Summer 1 we will be learning about Living and Growing. We will start our topic by going on our first school trip to Hesketh Farm.
We are reading the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar!
We have our own caterpillars in the classroom and we will be watching them grow and observing changes over time. (CLL, UTW)
We have our own fruit and vegetable shop in Reception. Miss Butler is our shop keeper. We are learning about different fruit and vegetables and describing them. We are counting out items to buy and taking turns. We are using coins to pay the shop keeper. (CLL, EAD, UTW, PSED)
In maths we were finding one less. We made current buns and used coins in our bakery as we sang the five current bun song together.
We are making insects out of playdough! (CLL, PD, EAD, UTW)
Today twelve chick eggs arrived in school. We have put the eggs in our incubator and numbered and named each egg. We will now wait 21 days to see if any of our eggs hatch and become real chicks. (CLL, EAD, UTW)
Our small world is looking very exciting this week. We are bringing minibeasts into our play and it looks like it is going to be a lot of fun. Plenty of opportunities to talk and use our imagination. (CLL, EAD, UTW)
We had a wonderful day at Hesketh Farm. The children went on a paddock walk to meet the animals and feed the goats. They collected eggs and handled the chicks. They took a tractor ride through the fields to learn about the cows and sheep and took time to handle and brush the guinea pigs. They even had time to make milk for the calves and feed them using bottles. (CLL, PD, UTW)
This week, we are reading What the Ladybird Heard by Julia Donaldson.
We are continuing to observe our caterpillars. They are eating and growing in their pots. We are hoping to see them start to change more in the next week.
In maths we have been sharing. Today we played a game in teams- we shared out different quantities of cubes. (PSED and Number)
We love welcoming parents into school to read at our Reading Cafe. Thank you for coming along!
May Day
We celebrated May Day with a Red, White and Blue parade. We enjoyed watching the maypole dancing. The children then had a May Day picnic together outside in the sun!
Over the weekend we have had some exciting developments in Reception. Our caterpillars have turned into chrysalis and will be moved into the net ready to become butterflies. Also, two of our eggs hatched this morning just in time for the children arriving at school! (CLL, PSED, UTW)
We enjoyed our Balance Bike sessions outside on the KS1 playground (PD).
The children enjoy making their own classroom. They are spending lots of time practising their flashcards and sound talking!
The time has come to prepare our garden. Mrs Spivey is busy preparing the soil. She has lots of very excited helpers.  (UTW, CLL, PSED)
The chicks are hatching in Reception. This morning Seedy hatched! So much excitement! (UTW, CLL, PSED)
Stay and Play Session
What a wonderful time we had at our stay and play session for parents. We made flower biscuits, bird feeders, pebble ladybirds, glitter butterflies, magic cress gardens and leaf rubbing. (PSED, UTW, CLL, EAD)
We wore our football kits and Bradford City colours to raise money for the burns unit in Bradford.
We released the butterflies into the wild. (UTW, PSED, CLL)
We took part in an online story session. The children used their own sticks to join in and take part. (CLL, EAD, L)
We took part in the sponsored obstacle course today. Children had a lot of fun taking part in the sunshine. Thank you to the grown ups who cheered the children on!
Summer 2 has arrived and with it has our new topic, Buckets and Spades.
In maths we investigated how many bears it would take to sink our foil boats. The children built their own boats and we estimated how many bears it might take to sink the boats. We then carried out the investigation to see if we were correct. (UTW, M, CLL)
The children are enjoying our role play ice-cream shop. A totally sensory experience! Lots of new smells and textures to explore. (CLL, UTW, PSED)
We have some really exciting LED writing boards to practice our mark making skills. (PD, CLL, L, UTW)
We took part in a Shakespeare drama workshop. We learnt about the story of A Midsummer Nights Dream. (CLL, PSED, PD, EAD)
Look at our independent secret writing!
Best day ever! Ice-creams for everyone! The children loved our visit from the ice-cream van on such a hot day!
Lots of fun at the Reception Sports Day! Turn taking, communication, listening and improving our motor skills.
Ice Cream Party!
