Autumn Term

What a busy start to the half term we have had! Have a look at what we have been busy doing so far!
And so we start! We are SO excited to begin our Year 3 journey! How much will we grow this year? How grown up will we look in July? Time flies so fast but we will have fun while it does!
Science: Rocks and Soils

We have been learning that not all rocks are the same. We developed our use of vocabulary to describe their properties: hard, soft, crumbly, layered, holey. We practised this first by describing the properties of different chocolates and categorising those before having a go at organising rocks into venn diagrams ourselves.
English: developing vocabulary

We learnt how to use a dictionary and worked in pairs to find the meaning for words from our class text, The Creakers. It was not easy but we persevered and with practise we will get better.
Practising spelling rules

We take spelling seriously in Year 3 and have been busy learning spelling rules to add to our spelling tool belt. We know we can use our phonics but have been practising our understanding of suffixes and how to use them to help us spell accurately.
Maths: Place Value

We found it tricky to use our great place value knowledge to help us find one, ten or one hundred more or less than so we stripped it back and used counters and abstract methods to develop our confidence.
PE: Handball

We developed our hand eye coordination, passing the ball to each other then moving inot a game.
Spanish

Every week Senora Haynes teaches us Spanish. We use actions to help us bring our learning to life as we practise.
KIRFs

Every day we practise our KIRFs to develop our rapid recall of key facts. This helps us be more fluent mathematicians. We play clear the board as a quick, fun, competitive way to learn our facts off by heart.
Spellings

We practised recognising and using our understanding of prefixes. We used what we know about spelling rules to see if a word looked and was spelt right.
Music

We practising writing using musical notation, clapped out the beat then practised playing the recorder.
Geography: Coasts

We learnt the different human and physical features of a coastline and worked in groups to match definitions, words and pictures.
PE: Handball

After warming up by developing our agility and teamwork, we learnt different ball passes that may give us the competitive edge in handball. We learnt to use a chest pass to put power and speed in our ball to get past our opponent. We learnt to use a bounce pass to get past an opponent when they are marking us, we practised in teams before seeing how fast we could pass in a game.
Geography: Coasts

We played quiz, quiz, swap to help us learn and remember our features of a coastline. We know we learn best from our peers so shared facts about our feature before swapping with a partner and moving on to find another.
Science: Rocks and Soils
We learnt the new vocabulary of permeable and impermeable. We then worked in groups to plan and carry out an experiment to see whether chalk is permeable or impermeable. This helped us to identify and explain how we felt in response to the talk thread ‘my builder is using chalk tiles on my roof’.
Geography: Coasts

To help us understand what erosion is, we used playdough. We made a headland and acted as the sea to see what it did to the rock. We developed our understanding of our new vocabulary of attrition and abrasion to describe what was happening,
DT: sewing
As part of our DT learning, we rehearsed new sewing stitches then used this to creat bookmark Christmas presents for our loved ones for Christmas,
