Spring Term

National Coal Mining Museum

The children visited the National Coal Mining Museum. They explored the museum and mines learning about the roles of adults and children as well as the daily life of miners in Yorkshire.

Police Visit

Years 5 and 6 were visited by the local community Policing team to talk about anti social behaviour. The children looked at images and identified where they saw ASB occurring. They were educated on the the legal implications of causing disruptive behaviour outside of school and their homes.

Computing

In computing we have been learning about databases. We searched and filtered databases to find relevant information. By practising this we then used online databases, Expedia Travel, to find flights and filter the options to find a flight based on a criteria.

We then created a PowerPoint presentation to present this to the class.

Science – Friction

Today we measured friction using friction meters. The aim of the lesson was to see how far our shoes can travel to show whether our shoes had a good grip. We used the table surface and the carpet to measure the friction and looked at the base of our shoes to identify what a strong grip looks like.

 Science – Types of friction

We investigated water and magnetic resistance. We identified that resistance was affected by the object in the water, our hands, and the movement of the water changed direction when we placed our hands inside and moved it. We used prior learning to look at and feel magnets attracting and repelling.

Science/DT/History

We looked at the use of pulleys and how they were important in transporting coal from the mines. We then investigated different materials that would help us to create our own pulleys by designing and making them from polystyrene cups, straws and string.

Snow White

The PTFA kindly organised a performance of Snow White for the whole school. We thoroughly enjoyed the show and the teachers showing us their dance moves!

DT

We have been investigating different motorised vehicles to help us plan and design a moving mine cart.

We looks at existing pictures of mine carts to help us design this and wrote a plan including who the cart is for, the materials we will need and how we are going to make it.

NSPCC Numbers Day

We enjoyed taking part in Buddy’s Challenge for number day. We completed a series of questions in groups and then put the pieces together to form the shape of a key. Team work makes the dream work!
