Autumn Term

When selecting our class counsellor, we decided to follow the British rules of democracy and vote for our class prefect. The children who wanted the role were asked to present a small presentation about why they are most suitable for the role. The rest of the class were then asked to vote for their winner.
Science
LO: Describe how living things are classified into broad groups according to common observable characteristics

Our Science topic this half term is classifying living things. Today we looked at a variety of living things then thought about how these could be sorted and grouped using similar characteristics. All groups found a different way to organise their living things and this opened up some lively discussion points about the reasoning behind the choices made.

After grouping our living things we found about Carl Linnaeus and his taxonomy system that is still used today to classify all living things.

We also have looked at how mold grows on fruit which then allowed us to look closely at organisms and how they are classified.
Computing - Communication and Collaboration
LO: describe how computers use addresses to access websites

This week Year 6 have been thinking about how information is able to be accessed on the internet and how communication reaches us over the internet. We thought about the use of IP addresses  (internet protocol) and DNS addresses (Domain Name Server). 6P were able to understand why we use DNS addresses rather than IP addresses when looking for a website.
Spelling

6P are really enjoying playing lots of different spelling games throughout the week to help them learn their weekly spellings. So far connect 4 has been the firm favourite! Pupils have built strategies up throughout the week to help them learn spelling rules, letter patterns and tricky bits and these have then be applied when completing our weekly spelling tests.
Writing

In English, we were investigating the character Vita from our class reader - The Good Thieves.  6P wrote their own questions to ask Vita, and children took it in turns to be in the Hot Seat - answering questions as Vita. We have also created multiple pieces of writing from the book, such as: setting descriptions, narratives and character descriptions.
Maths

In Maths, we have learnt about place value and the four operations (addition, subtraction, division and multiplication). We also had the opportunity to vary our learning and complete some tasks through the use of technology!
As part of our writing topic, we have been reading 'Armistice Runner'. We wrote a newspaper article about the young man (Ernest) winning a fell race on the same day his brother had passed in the war. The children were asked to do some role play and act out interviews in the hope of producing some higher-level writing.
Christmas was a busy period for Year 6. We attended our annual Christmas event at St Cuthberts, made Christmas cards and calendars and finally, learnt the songs for our Christingle service.
We wanted to make a link between Christmas and maths. As a class we explored coordinates and how they work. The children were taught how to draw and label a graph, then plot coordinates to make an image of Santa. The results were fantastic!
