Autumn Term

Science - Human digestion.
This week 4S have started learning about the human digestive system. Today we were exploring where digestion starts and how it travels through our bodies. We observed how the shape of our teeth differs according to the jobs that they need to do.
Nell bank
Here are some things you may wish to look prior to our visit to Nell Bank.
Nell bank website - Click here
Dormitories - Click here

If you have any question about Nell Bank please ask Mr Sugden.
Understanding and Boosting self-esteem workshop.

We were lucky to have a visitor in school who spoke about self-esteem. The children had some great discussion around their self-esteem and spoke about how our self-esteem changes and what we can do to increase it.
Science - Human Digestion

Today we replicated our digestive system. We made banana and chocolate spread sandwiches and took them through the whole process of digestion. This is Mr Sugden’s favourite experiment.
Human digestion - In this investigation we put some egg shells in different drinks to find out what would happen to them over time. The egg shells represented our teeth and we wanted to investigate the effect of different drinks on our teeth enamel. We concluded that the drinks with the most amount of sugar had the worst impact and the least impact was the drink that had the least amount of sugar. After, we discussed what we could do to prevent this from happening to our teeth e.g.  brush them regularly, cut down on the amount of sugar we consumed and visit the dentist regularly.
PE tennis - children learnt the rules of tennis and then played some games against their partner. The class really enjoyed this lesson.
Spanish - international languages day.
We swapped our Spanish lesson for a dance lesson. We learnt some of the basic moves of a flamenco dance.
ICT - We have been learning all about websites. We have looked at the features such as information, photos, buttons, links, logo and videos. We also uploaded this message as a class. At the end of the lesson we explored Chrome Music Lab.
PSHCE - feelings
Today’s lesson was based around feeling in different situations. We sued some pictures as prompts and discussed how we could be feeling more than one feeling. Some children then demonstrated how they feel in each picture.
RE - bible time.
Year 4 we’re lucky enough to be invited to St Cuthberts where they learnt a lot of things about the bible. This was a great interactive session for all.
Geography - rivers
Today the children used an atlas to locate some of the UK’s rivers. The children really enjoyed using an atlas.
Year 4 we’re lucky enough to have a visit from Bradford aquatics who spoke about water safety.
Geography - Rivers.
We have closely looked at the river Aire and Danube where we have used a map and some key facts to compare the 2 rivers. The children then walked around telling other children what they thought the most important fact about each river was.
Maths - rounding
We applied our knowledge of rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000, the children had to make a 4 digit number by rolling a dice 4 times and then had to round the number accordingly. The children loved this activity, some of them drew number lines to help them round.
Maths - addition
Today we looked at adding 2 4-digit numbers with one exchange. The children practiced this practically with place value counters. Tomorrow we will be moving on to using a formal written method to add 2 4-digit numbers with one exchange.
PE - OAA
This half term we have started OAA. We started the unit off with some team building games and the added features onto a map of the playground. Then the children had to accurately mark where they have left the cone in the playground and their partner had to find the cone using the map.
Maths - palindrome challenge.
They children were asked to see how many times they needed to add before they created a palindrome. First they had to roll a dice to create a 2-digit number and/or a 3-digit number. Then they had to reverse the number and finally add them together. They had to continue this process until they created a palindrome.
Science - classification.
This afternoon we were classifying objects. Initially they found it hard to think of question but with some prompting they were able to create classification keys for things they have on their tables.
Timetable stations!
In maths this morning we had 5 different times table games set up. We had splat, cards, snakes and ladders, cup stacking and matching games. What a fun way to learn!
Meet the athlete!
all children took part in a HIT circuit, they all did very well.
Subtraction.
At the start of our subtraction unit we use place value counters to support us. We then moved onto using the formal written method of column subtraction.
History - WW2.
This was our first lesson on WW2. We discussed and watched videos about why and how to war started and who was involved.
Allies - Great Britain, France, Russia & USA.
Axis - Germany, Italy & Japan.
The children then found and labelled these on a map of the world.
History - WW2
After learning about the Battle of Dunkirk and the Battle of Britain we they looked at the Blitz. Children were then set a task of creating a clear action plan of what to do when the air raid siren goes off. The had to think about entertainment, food and drink and the most important one - their safety.
We the looked at what an Anderson shelter was and made 3D models.
We finished our local history unit by looking at how people close to use were involved in the war efforts or remembered it as a child. Thank you to those children who brought items into class for us to have a look at.
DT - Making books come alive.
Recently, we have started our DT project on making books come alive.
Session 1
we looked at different pop up books and discussed what we we liked and disliked about them, how they might have been made, what mechanism’s are used and finally we discussed how effective they were.
Session 2
The children measured and cut using appropriate tools. We then discussed and compared the 6 different pop ups and how we may use them in our pop up books.
English - instruction writing.
We have been looking at instructions and taking them apart to see what features they include. The children discovered they have adverbs of manner and time, imperative verbs and preposition. We then played noodle soup where they had to pick a word from each category and create an instruction. On Friday, we will be writing our own instructions on how to make fireworks.
Science - states of matter
To start our new unit children were given some pictures cards which they had to sort and group, through discussion and some adult support we then re-categorised them into solids, liquids and gasses. We then discussed what the 3 states of matter. At the end of the lesson the children did a quick experiment to investigate what would happen to raisins if they were out in lemonade.
