Autumn Term

The children had the chance to show off their computer skills when they typed up their school councillor manifesto. We had some fantastic reasons why they should be elected.

Humaira won the class vote and we are looking forward to the ideas and changes the school council bring this year.
We have made a flying start with our spellings in year five. We play a variety of spelling games in class to help us remember our new words. Here we are playing 'clear the board' and 'connect four'.
We have been revisiting our learning from year 4. Our focus in English has been fronted adverbials.
We used a range of place, time and conjunction adverbs to write about what happened next in our class story, The Great Mouse Plot.
Meet our new playtime buddies.

Our playtime buddies applied for the position and were selected based on their application. Their role will be to play with, support other children and help staff at break and lunch times. They have received their special badges and high visibility jackets so they stand out to other children and can make their playtimes and lunchtimes incredibly fun.

In English we have been learning about and reading The Great Mouse Plot.
We wrote a letter of apology and the designed and drew our own sweets in a jar inspired by the text ready to display in the classroom.
We even did some water colour pictures of the illustrations from the book. They turned out wonderfully!
Within our Geography lessons we have been comparing human and physical features of Idle and Clapham. We looked at a range of maps to identify similarities and differences. We cannot wait to go on our residential!
We took a walk down to Idle Village to observe the surroundings so that we can compare this to Clapham when we go on our residential to Ingleborough Hall.
The children were fascinated by how much has changed over the years and completed a survey to mark down what they could see.
In our guided reading lessons we have been focusing on understanding a range f vocabulary and finding synonyms and antonyms of words. We have been using the text to retrieve and working on our inferential skills to read between the lines.
This week our focus was reading a leaflet about caving to work on each of these skills.
Ingleborough

The children enjoyed a range if activities during their week long visit. They studied and walked around Clapham village, gorge scrambled, crawled through caves, visited the show caves, aimed during archery and explored the great outdoors during the long walk.
what a brilliant experience and memories made!
In our computing lessons we have been learning about searches and search engines. We learnt that search engines use a web crawler to create an index of all the pages on the world wide web. This is a quick way of finding out key information. We had a go at making our own web pages for Blakehill and played a game to see whose page ranked highest on the algorithm.
PSHE
We have been learning our relationships with others. We started this unit of work by understanding what it means to work collaboratively.
Each group was given 6 sheets of paper and tape. Their task was to see which group could successfully build a tower that would stand independently. No one succeeded as they in groups they came to the conclusion that they started with the wrong resources even though they worked together.
Mr Froud paid year 5 a visit to deliver a Bible Exhibition.
He spoke about holy scripture from different religions and shared artifacts with the children.
As part of the Sports For Schools event that was held in school, the children had the opportunity to workout alongside Invictus Competitor, Sean Gaffney.
The children joined Sean to complete, push ups, spotty dog, star jumps and leg drive exercises.

Autumn 2
In Spanish we have been learning how to give reasons.
We have been discussing our likes and dislikes and giving reasons for our choices.
Using our knowledge of the four operations, in maths we have been comparing and ordering fractions. This is a tricky concept so we have engaged in lots of practical starters to help us. We played a game by raising our hands if the fraction was big and touched our toes if the fraction was small. We definitely got our minds and bodies working hard!
Year 5 and 6 had a visit from the Police to discuss the dangers and consequences of knife crime. The children were made aware of what constitutes as a weapon and the current legislation around knife crime.
Children in Need
We came to school dressed in spots and yellow to donate money for Children in Need. It was also our first class assembly this year and we were really excited to perform in front of half of the school and our parents.
Fractions are tricky! We have been learning how to add and subtract unit and mixed number fractions. This is a tricky concept that we have spent time working on. The children used whiteboards to answer quiz questions to check their understanding. They then applied this into their maths books.
We are beginning to get ready for Christmas! The children made paperchains and followed the net of a square based pyramid to create a gift box. These were then attached to a hoop to create a tree! Mr Lumb then helped us to hang this in the corridor. How fabulous does it look?
Punjabi Roots came to visit us again this year. It's important for our pupil to recognise diversity in our society and celebrate differences. This visit linked to our PHSE lessons on valuing differences.
George and Riley wowed the KS2 crowd during the Rocksteady concert.
They have had the opportunity to learn how to play the guitar and keyboard in addition to the ukulele lessons year 5 are taught.
We decided to have a 'no book day' in maths. The children worked in pairs to support and challenge each other to complete multiplication calculations.
The maths objectives in year 5 are to multiply 2, 3 and 4 digit numbers by a 2digit number.
We will tackle more complex calculations in the new year.
In computing we have been learning about databases. We found out why databases are used, what information it holds and how to search and filter.
We then used this information to find out about the survivors and victims of the Titanic and look at how we could book a holiday.
5J definitely make great travel agents!
Christmas jumpers and Christmas lunch gave us all a festive feel. Pudding was certainly enjoyed by all!

We joined the Blue Cross for a fun ‘Pets at Christmas’ online event. We found out how how to keep pets safe and happy, to make sure they enjoy Christmas time as much as we do!
