Summer Term

Computing

We have been looking at sorting data and information using flat file databases. We have used databases to order and answer questions and have even used the real life database 'Expedia' to book a flight to New York.
English

We have been looking at different letters and identifying the features in preparation for writing our own letter to make Blakehill more eco-friendly.
PSHE

We have been learning about rights and respect in our PSHE lessons. We have learnt the difference between fact and opinion, learnt about duties and how to be sensible with money. We enjoyed discussions as a class and hot seated to play out different scenarios.
Science

As part of our unit all about separating mixtures, we had a go at sorting cheerios, rice and flour into three separate piles. It was very difficult until we were given sieves and collanders. We were then able to successfully separate each solid.
Science

We learnt about solids that were soluble and insoluble and had a go at dissolving different solids to form solutions. We filtered the solutions which didn't dissolve to recover the solids and liquid. We learnt about why it is necessary to filter liquids and how some countries in the world do not have access to clean water like we do.
King Charles' Coronation Celebration

We enjoyed completing a wordsearch all about King Charles and the Royal family.
We also completed a reading comprehension to find out more about the royal family and the Coronation.
We celebrated in school by watching the KS1 parade, listening to the special visitor, maypole dancing and enjoying an ice cream at the end of the day.
Make Blakehill Eco - friendly

We have been learning about how to make our school more eco friendly. We took a walk around school to see what changes we could make. We have started to switch the lights off in our classroom to help the environment.
Reading

We received a snippet of a new book called Which Way to Anywhere.
The children enjoyed reading this and completing the activities inside the booklet.
We sent these pictures to the author who is sending us a copy of the book for us to read in class.
Science

We have been investigating soluble and insoluble materials. We completed a practical experiment and measured this up against the predictions we made.
PSHE

The children loved writing facts that they knew about the human body.
Did you know that you can smell garlic from your feet?
Thanks Dilan, for this insightful fact!
PSHE

We have been learning about different disabilities and conditions. The children brought in their home comfort to keep them calm and relaxed whilst working in school.
It was lovely to hear about why they were important to them
Sports day
The children enjoyed the carousel of activities for sport's day and completed in a relay race to at the end of the event. They were happy to sit, relax and enjoy an ice pop at the end of an exhausting morning!
Health Week

For health week this year, each class had a different country to learn about. Our country was Scotland. We found out about traditional Scottish dances such as the Highland fling. We had a go and found it tiring because of all the high jumps and high knees.
Health Week

For health week this year, each class had a different country to learn about. Our country was Scotland. We learnt about traditional Scottish foods and were tasked with making our own oatcakes. First, we tried some oatcakes from the supermarket. Hannah described them as 'eating a cork coaster.' We decided that when we made our own we would need to adapt them to make them edible and tasty.
Health Week

Our oatcakes were a triumph! We carefully measured the ingredients, mixed, baked and ate them. We decided to add our own toppings as our design element. We even had seconds the next day!
History

We have been learning all about the Anglo-Saxons in our history topic. We learnt about what daily life would have been like for someone in the Anglo-Saxon era and where they would have lived. We had a go at designing our own settlement. We labelled what our buildings would have been made from, the jobs people would have had and any food/animals we had.
ANGLO SAXON WORKSHOP DAY

We had 'Edmund' the Anglo-Saxon come and visit us in school. He taught us a range of things throughout the day and we kicked off our learning finding out about weapons that the Anglo-Saxons would have had. We recreated the Battle of Molden where half of us were Anglo-Saxons defending our settlement and the other half were the invading Vikings. We learnt about techniques such as a shield wall and about the advantages of being near a river in battle.
We loved looking at artefacts spanning from Roman times to modern day. We had to be just like real archeologists and dig through the sand before uncovering objects with a brush. We discussed what each artefact might be and what time period it could be from based on our existing knowledge. Most of the artefacts were made from metal.
We expored daily life of an Anglo-Saxon by playing some board games. We played Nine Men's Morris and Hnefatafl. Both games used strategies and watching carefully what the other players were doing. We then took part in the ruling of an Anglo-Saxon kingdom. Every decision made, had a concequence which impacted on our settlement and the welfare of the Anglo-Saxons in Britain.
