Spelling Games

During the school day, children have explicit spelling teaching time in their English lessons.
Children learn the spelling rules/ patterns for their year group during this time.

Children play a series of games to help embed learning.

Below, please find some spelling games your child plays during the school day.

Clear the board
2 players

Player 1 - top row of words
Player 2 - bottom row of words

Write your 10 spelling words down (5 on each row)

  • Roll the dice
  • Look at the spelling for that number.
  • Look, cover, say, write, check
When you are writing the word think about the spelling rules that have been taught during learning time.
If you spelt the word correctly, you get to colour it in.

The winner is the first person to clear the board.
Connect 4
Aim of the game: Get 4 in a row!
You can simplify this game by getting 3 in a row too.

  • Pick a colour each
  • Player 1 - pick a word and the opponent covers it up
  • Write/spell that word on your whiteboard
  • If you get it correct, put a cross through it. If you get it wrong you can't cross it out.
  • Take turns!

Can you beat your friend?
