Computing - Databases
LO: Use a spreadsheet to create real life models of information to offer a solution to a real life problem
LO: Use functions to help calculate data
This week we continued to use the spreadsheet we created to help a library keep a record of how many books are borrowed annually by its members. We used the SUM function to help us find the total amount of books borrowed by each members and the total number of books borrowed by all members. We looked at how we can enter cell names into the formula bar or how we can select the cell we want to be included in the formula. We also explored how we can change the values in the cells and this updates the total automatically.
We then moved on to creating a new spreadsheet that could be used by a tuck shop in school. We thought about the information we would need to include on the spreadsheet and what calculations we would want to use on it. Next week are going to add our formulas to the spreadsheet and explore how it could be used to solve problems.
Science - Changing Circuits
K LO: Compare and give reasons for variations in how components function, including the brightness of bulbs.
WS LO: Use test results to make predictions to set up further comparative and fair tests.
Today we investigated these two questions:
Is there a link between the brightness of a bulb and the number of bulbs in the circuit?
How else can we change the brightness of the bulb?
Working in groups, we looked at how we can add components to a simple circuit with a bulb, that will effect the brightness of the original bulb in the circuit. After making our initial predictions about brightness of the bulb, we tested our predictions and recorded our findings in order to make conclusions about what effects the brightness of the blubs.
Spellings
LO: Homophones: In the pairs of words opposite, nouns end –ce and verbs end –se
We played roll and read today using our spellings we are learning this week. We played this to help us remember the -ce rule for nouns and -se rule for verbs. We were able to practise our pronunciation of the words and ensure we said and nouns and verbs correctly.
Comic Relief
Today we wore something red with a donation given for Comic Relief. We had red socks, red jumpers, red trousers and even some red hair! Good effort 6R!

Today we have been recapping previous knowledge of databases, in particular spreadsheets. Using Microsoft Excell, we looked at cells, how to add data to these cells and how to format them. We also looked at how to find information using cell references.
This week we created a spreadsheet to help a library keep a record of how many books are borrowed annually by its members. We have created our spreadsheets ready to add formulas to next week.
Science - Changing Circuits
K LO: Construct a simple series electrical circuit, identifying and naming its basic parts, including cells, wires, bulbs, switches and buzzers
K LO: Use recognised symbols when representing a simple circuit in a diagram
WS LO: Record data and results of increasing complexity using scientific diagrams
Using what we had learnt from “pass the squeeze” we looked how this looks in an electrical circuit. We identified the components needed to make a simple series circuit that would illuminate a bulb and had a go at building it. We then able to use this to help us draw circuit diagrams and write an explanation about positively charged electrons moving through a series circuit.

K LO: Understand how electricity flows around a circuit
K LO: Identify how to find faults in an electrical circuit
To help us understand the movement of positively charged electrons through a series circuit we played “pass the squeeze” to replicate what happens in the circuit. With the charge (the squeeze) moving from the battery (person who started the squeeze) we were able to see how in a complete circuit electricity (the squeeze) can flow. We then looked at what happened when the circuit was incomplete. We discovered the electrons (the squeeze) could not flow past the break in the circuit, therefore components in the circuit would not work.
Maths
LO: investigate decimal numbers to 2dp, taking into account place value.
Today Year 6 had their minds blown by their decimals investigation in Mrs Russell’s maths group. Using a number square for addition and by following the instructions - every calculation that was attempted gave the same answer! Trying to explain why this happened prove to be a perplexing challenge for everyone!
Art & Design
Mother’s Day Cards
Today we created our Mother’s Day cards. Using Spring as a stimulus for our cards, we drew a blossom branch and added a 3D element of some hanging hearts to our branches.
We hope the lucky mums and grandmas of those pupils in 6R love their cards as much as we did!
Not All Heroes Wear Capes!
For World Book Day this year children across school have been thinking about heroes and how heroes come in all shapes and forms, from superheroes to doctors, soldiers to leaders and Nurses to our friends and family.
Today children came to school dressed as a hero.
Maths
LO: Investigate decimal numbers, taking into consideration place value.
Today Mrs Russell's maths group have been investigating decimal numbers. We took part in a challenging game where we took it in turns to choose a number from the grid and mark it on the spiral. We kept taking turns, trying to mark three numbers next to each other to score points.
We thought about the following:

Does it matter who goes first?
Does it matter which number you choose first?
Computing - E-safety
LO: Understand how to keep ourselves safe online when communicating with others.
We have all been spending a lot time online due to lockdown and relying on digital technology in order to communicate with our friends and family. We have also been using different social media platforms to entertain ourselves during this time. Because of this we have been thinking about how we can keep ourselves safe from the dangers linked to online communication.
Today we have gained an understanding of the term "GROOMING"
PHSCE
LO: identify positive ways to face new challenges (eg transition to secondary school)
LO: Can identify some factors that affect emotional health and well-being.
Today we talked about our feelings towards secondary schools. Last week we were allocated our secondary school for September. The transition to secondary school poses lots of challenges so we began by thinking about the initial positives and negatives of moving to secondary school.
RE- Sacred Places
LO: To be able to identify and locate religious buildings.
Over the last term we have been looking at special places in Christianity, Buddhism and Sikhism. WE have thought about the different religious buildings and scared places people would visit on a religious pilgrimage.
Today we have thought about our locality and the different religious buildings we have around us. Using an A-Z atlas we have located religious buildings in the locality to Blakehill and then in the city of Bradford. We were able to use symbols to identify some of the buildings and acronyms for others. We looked for clues on the maps such as street names.
English - Phase 1
LO: Predict what might happen from details stated and implied
Today we started to explore our text focus for this half term. Using the comic strip illustrations from the text we discussed the following in groups:
- Characters
- Themes
- Events
- Settings
- Genre
We then used our discussion to help us write predictions about the text that were informed by the evidence from the illustrations and our inferences by using this evidence.
