Summer Term

Planting 
Before the Easter holidays Reception planted some broad beans as part of their growing topic. They first sequenced pictures to understand how to plant the seeds and then looked at different books to learn about how they can help the plants grow. 
 
Understanding the World
  • Plant seeds and care for growing plants. 
  • Understand the key features of the life cycle of a plant.
  • Begin to understand the need to respect and care for the natural environment and all living things.
  • Understand the effect of changing seasons on the natural world around them.

Hand Washing Workshop
(Tuesday 18th April)
The children in RS had a visit from the Bradford School Nursing team who spoke to the children about the importance of hand washing and the best way to wash our hands to get rid of germs. The children learnt a song and looked at their hands under a UV light.

  • Further develop the skills they need to manage the school day successfully

We have introduced the children to the caterpillars we have living in our classroom. We will be watching them closely over the next few weeks to learn about their life cycle and observe how they grow.

  • Use talk to help work out problems and organise thinking and activities, and to explain how things work and why they might happen
RE
(WC: 24th April)

In RE this week RS have been talking about who helps us and how we can be a good friend. During today’s circle time we made a kindness web. The children were asked to pass the wool to someone in the circle and say something kind about them. The children listened carefully to one another and made each other smile with their compliments.

Zoolab Visit!

(25th April)

The children had an exciting morning with Eleanor from Zoolab who visited us with some of her minibeast friends. We met Diesel the millipede, Turbo the hissing cockroach, Kas the snake, Splat the Australian tree frog and Tilly the tarantula!                             

The children were very brave with lots of them putting out their hands to hold the minibeasts or giving them a stroke as they were brought around the circle.

Maths

(2nd May)

So far this term RS have been learning about numbers from 10 to 20 and how they can be represented using numicon, unifix cubes and tens frames. Today the children were all given a flashcard of 2 tens frames representing an amount. They had to use the stem sentence “10 and ____ more makes ____” to work out what number their flashcard was representing. The children then worked collaboratively and communicated with each other to get into groups with children whose flashcards represented the same number as theirs.

 

Mathematics 

  • Link the number symbol (numeral) with its cardinal number value
  • Count beyond 10

Preparations for the King's Coronation

The preparations for the King’s coronation are well under way in Reception. RS have had a busy day learning about The Royal Family, decorating crowns in the workshop, making streamers in the finger gym, painting Union Jacks and writing tea party shopping lists that are fit for a king! The children are excited to continue learning about this special event that will be a key moment in history and are looking forward to the celebrations being help later in the week.

Celebrations for King Charles III coronation 
(Friday 5th May 2023)
Reception have loved celebrating the King’s coronation today! They started their day by parading decorated bikes, scooters and prams around the hall before returning to class and singing the National Anthem. The children had a special coronation themed dinner and were treated to a surprise visit from the ice cream van this afternoon. They all looked great in their red, white and blue clothes.  
The children have been busy learning the National Anthem for the Kings Coronation too ...
Phonics - Revising /ng/
(Tuesday 16th May)
After compiling a list of words that include the digraph /ng/ the children were challenged to either write some of the words they had thought of or put the /ng/ words into a sentence. Here's the fantastic writing that the children produced!

  • Form lower-case and capital letters correctly. 
  • Write short sentences with words with known sound-letter correspondences using capital letter and full stop.

It's time to release the butterflies ... 
(Thursday 18th May)

Over the past couple of weeks the children have been watching each of our caterpillars grow and form their chrysalis. This week the butterflies started to emerge and today it was time to say goodbye and release them into nature.

PSE - Mental Health Awareness Week
 
Mental Health refers to your emotional, psychological and social wellbeing. Your mental health can change on a daily basis and over time, and can be affected by a range of factors.
In assembly Mrs Wardell shared the story 'Lucy's Blue Day' and we took time to discuss our emotions and how we react to situations. Click below to hear the story again.

Amazing Animals
 
As part of our topic 'Amazing Animals' the children have enjoyed looking at 3 main focus texts. We learnt about different types of animals from the smallest of minibeasts to the largest farm animals in both fiction and non-fiction books!

Phonics - revising /ar/ and /or/
(Wc Monday 12th June)
This week in phonics the children have been practising the above sounds in both their reading and writing. The children have been given a sentence to write and then challenged to write a sentence that uses a word with the /ar/ and /or/ sound. Below are some of the sentences that the children wrote.

Sports Day 
What a busy afternoon the children in RS had. They competed in a speed jump, bean bag throw, skittles, egg 'n' spoon race and running races. They tried their best, showed resilience and showed good sportsmanship.

Phonics - Writing CVCC
(Monday 3rd July 2023)
The children worked hard on reading and writing CVCC words. The children were given part of a word and had to add the last sound to finish the word. They then had a go at independently writing CVCC words. 
 
We used sound buttons and our phoneme fingers to read the following words:
  • bump
  • jump
  • went 
  • tent
  • damp
  • bend 
  • mend
