Spring Term

Science - Materials
Children have used different materials to make a waterproof hat. They had to think carefully, using their science knowledge, about which materials were the most suitable and why.
Maths - Shape 
Children have discussed the difference between 2D and 3D shapes and sorted them into groups.
PE - Multi-Sports
Children are underway learning all the multi-sports games in preparation for the competition against other schools soon! Fantastic team work!
Maths
2D shapes 
LO: To know the names and properties of 2D shape.
Creating 2D shapes out of straws - what a great way of learning all about 2D shapes in maths. The  children carefully thought about the sides and vertices of each shape carefully.
Science 
LO: To use suitable materials to create a waterproof hat
Children put their hats to the test today and tested whether their hats were waterproof or not. After the experiment the children evaluated their hats thinking carefully about they could change next time.
Maths - Shape 
Children have loved learning all about symmetry this week and experimented using mirrors to see if their shapes were symmetrical. 
English - Verbs 
LO: To know what a verb is
Children searched for verbs in the story and played a game of charades to deepen their understanding of verbs. 
Maths - Money 
Everyday, the children in 2G, have to make an amount using coins before they are allowed to eat their snack. The class check the child's addition to see if they are correct.
Maths 
LO: To draw the other half of symmetrical shapes
Children used rulers to create the other half of shapes ensuring they were symmetrical. Children carefully counted squares on the page to make sure it was exactly the same on both sides.
RE
LO: To make good choices 
Children enjoyed discussing which school rules were the most important and why. 
History - The Great Fire of London Workshop
Children took part in an amazing workshop with Sir William Petty. They learnt lots of historical facts about 'The Great Fire of London' and had many questions to ask during the day. The children took part in experiments to understand how the fire spread. The children developed fantastic understanding of the event and enjoyed their day!
English - SPaG
LO: To know when to double the consonant when adding -ed
Year 2 have been learning all about the suffix -ed. They have understood when they need to double the consonant when adding -ed.
PE
L.O - To be able to demonstrate accuracy with a variety of objects.
L.O - To display good sportsmanship and teamwork in a competition environment
 
In PE we played a variety games to practice for our upcoming competition, this included playing a variety of sports/games such as Football, Hockey, Cone dash and retrieve and throw relays. This helped us improve our accuracy as there was always a target we had to aim for so we could score points for our team. 
 
Maths
LO: To make 2D shapes and understand their properties
Children really enjoyed exploring how to make 2D shapes with straws and sticks. They thought carefully about their properties. 
Maths 
LO: To draw 2D shapes using a ruler 
2G have learnt how to draw familiar 2D shapes using rulers. This was a skill that required concentration, perseverance and a keen eye! 
Well done Year 2!
Punjabi Roots 
Blakehill were lucky enough to have Punjabi Roots in for an amazing assembly and then we took part in a workshop!
RE
LO: To know the ten commandments 
Children worked in pairs and discussed the ten commandments. They enjoyed taking part in oral discussion about which commandment they felt was the most important and why. Children were then asked to order them from most important to least important and explain their thoughts to the class. 
 
This was such an interesting discussion! Great work 2G!
DT
LO: To design and make a wheely toy
Children have explored different wheely toys and looked at how they move. They discovered that different wheeled toys can move in different ways. The children designed and made their wheel toys and thought carefully about how they wanted their toys to move.
 
Dogs Trust 
Pupils got the chance to take part in a lovely workshop from the Dogs Trust. They learnt how to act and behave around dogs and how to be kind and considerate towards them. They were an asset to Blakehill and it was such a fund session!
DT - Wheeled toys
The children loved trying out their wheeled toy they had made from scratch! They discussed what they liked and disliked about the toy they made.
 
E-Safety 
Today we had a big discussion in the classroom about how safe the internet it. We looked discussed what is safe and what isn't safe when using the computer/ipad. 
 
We expressed our views and justified our answers after reading several scenarios. 
 
Home School Project- Bread Making 
This term the children were set an optional homework task. They were asked to create a loaf of bread linking to our 'Great Fire of London' topic.
The children tried so hard and thought really carefully about their master pieces. Mrs Malec and I really enjoyed being the judges and we loved the taste,appearance and creativity!

Reading 
LO: To retrieve facts about a text
Year 2 are absolutely loving their whole class reading sessions.  They are enjoying sharing the text as a class and working with their friends to trap the answers in the text.  We love to read in 2G!
 
Spelling Game
Every week we spend lots of time playing games with our peers to embed our knowledge of spelling rules. We play against Miss Gardner too!
Computing 
LO: To create tally charts and pictograms
The children have been busy in the car park at school. They have been making tally charts about the different coloured cars in the staff car park and they recorded their findings in a tally chart. 
After collecting their findings they transferred their data in to a pictogram!
