Summer Term

Welcome to Summer Term!

What a lovely sunny start to our last term together!
In English we have loved our new text called, 'Marcy and the riddle of the sphinx'. Marcy has been on an exciting adventure to help save her father. The children have been learning about recounts and are currently planning their recount! They are putting themselves in Marcy's shoes and planning their own rescue! It will be exciting to read them!
In Reading, we have been using the same text to make predictions, make inferences about Marcy's feelings as she makes her way through the rescue mission. We have also written our own retrieval questions and explored lots of new words!
Our first unit of work in Maths has been all about Time. This has been a tricky one for the children but they have been very resilient and haven't given up. The pupils have been learning to read the analogue clock to the minute and compare these times with the digital clock.
In Maths, we have also been learning lots of facts linked to time - months, hours, minutes, days, years. the children did a great job sorting out these facts and learning while doing it.
Outdoor PE has been wonderful as the weather has been so sunny! 3N enjoyed their first experience of Orienteering around school. In the first lesson they needed to locate the points on the map and write what object was there. It will be getting trickier in the weeks ahead as the pupils will learn to navigate around school using a compass!
In RE we have been exploring local communities we are part of. This has involved thinking about the different religious groups in our community. It was lovely to hear from some of the pupils who attend these places.
Art has been very exciting as we got to design and complete our dragon's eyes. We are very proud of the work we have completed! Have a look at some of them!
In Computing, we have been learning about data branching and databases. We have learnt about Yes No questions and how to group various items. In our books, we grouped some dinosaurs under certain questions before having a go online. Lots of us managed to create a successful data branch to sort out different objects on the online programme. Class 3N really enjoyed this activity.
Science has continued to be fun, learning all about plants and what they need to grow. We set up an investigation this week to see of plants really do need - water, light and nutrients to grow. 3N planted some sun flower seeds and took one of these away from each pot, leaving only Pot D that had nutritious soil, water and light. One of them was planted in sand and another was put in the cupboard! We wonder of any of the seeds will grow?!
PHSE this half term has been all about, 'Being the best me!'. We have looked a lot at how to look after ourselves e.g how to ensure we have a balanced diet, what to do when we are poorly and how not to spread illnesses. We have debated what choices we should make to help look after our bodies e.g. less screen time, going to bed early and less fizzy pop. 3N have written lists of top tips, designed posters and had some really good class discussions about this topic.
In English, the pupils have just completed an end of unit 'Big Write'. It was a recount based on our text in English. The pupils wrote their own recount about an adventure they went on to save their father. It involved a magical journey to a new land and lots of scary obstacles that the children needed to overcome in order to rescue him. They did a fantastic job! Well done to all!
This week we were excited to start our new topic about 'Ancient Egypt' in History. We stated the unit by exploring the timeline of history and finding out exactly when this amazing civilisation began and finished. We did some sorting tasks and discussed lots about what we noticed when looking at timelines.
in History this week, we also explored the importance of the River Nile to the Ancient Egyptians and learnt all about how they invented paper called papyrus. We enjoyed writing our names and some other words using hieroglyphs!
In English, we have started learning about playscripts. We are currently learning about the features of a playscript and are writing our recent text, Marcy and the riddle of the sphinx into a playscript. We are enjoying learning about scene descriptions, dialogue, stage directions etc. We might get to perform one of our scenes at our assembly next half term.
In outdoor PE, we have continued to develop our orienteering skills trying to work better as a team and with more speed. This week we needed to collect a letter from each point and then try and work out what the word was. The word was 'Orienteering'.
In spelling, we have been learning about prefixes and suffixes all year. This week we did a sorting task of prefixes and suffixes and then we had a competition to see how many words we could think of that used these suffixes and prefixes. We looked at some of the spelling rules to help us remember how to spell them.
in Maths, we have spent some time revising fractions and are now finding out lots about shape, angles and lines. We have been using our bodies to help us remember about angles, right angle turns and what clockwise and anticlockwise mean.
Our Ancient Egyptian Workshop was a huge success with the pupils. They learnt lots of new knowledge about the great pyramids of Egypt, pharaoh life, the mummification process and much more. All pupils were engaged and now have a much greater understanding of this great civilisation that spanned over 3,000 years. They also enjoyed playing the game of Senet and drew some hieroglyphs with iron-oxide ink and a reed pen.
Welcome to Summer Term 2!

This week in English the children were excited to discover more about our new text 'Romeo and Juliet'. The children made some really good predictions about the text, based on snowballs thrown out about the setting of the story. They also wrote some super setting descriptions with lots of expanded noun phrases and fronted adverbials.
In History, we continued to explore more about life in Ancient Egypt. The children built on their knowledge about the mummification process and completed a double spread of knowledge in their books. They included labelled diagrams, facts of information, did you know bubbles and lots more!
In Maths, we have continued to enjoy our unit on Shape. We have learnt about angles, different types of lines and are starting to learn about 2D and 3D shapes. We have played lots of description games to help us identify the shapes. We have drawn shapes and found shapes in the classroom and every day life.
in outdoor PE, we have been developing skills using a bat and a ball. We enjoyed lots of activities this week using a tennis ball and racket. Some of us were able to run really quickly while balancing a ball on a bat.
Our English workshop linked to Romeo and Juliet was fantastic! We enjoyed doing this out in the sunshine. We spent time in pairs and groups creating lots of different statues and objects linked to the text. 3N are very eager to find out how the story finishes!
Thank you for coming to our Ancient Egyptian assembly! We loved performing for you - the children did a fantastic job, especially the dead body!!!
In Maths we have continued to explore shape and finished the unit by building our own 3D shapes using the unifix cubes! We also played some, 'Guess the shape' games to describe the shapes using all the vocabulary on our working wall!
In Spanish this half term we have been learning parts of the body. We especially enjoy using songs to help us remember the body names.
This half term in Computing, we have been learning about programming. We have enjoyed using the Scratch programme to help us understand. This week we learnt how to change our sprite and the backgrounds and some of us got as far as making our sprite move!
In RE, we have continued to learn about different faiths in our community. This week we learnt about the Hindu religion. The pupils love to discuss how religions are different and love to share their own opinions about faith and beliefs people may have.
In Reading, we have finished reading Romeo and Juliet and are now looking at a poem called 'Shadow'. This is to link in with our new Science unit - Light and Shadows. This week we enjoyed discussing the meaning of the poem in detail.
Inflatable day was thoroughly enjoyed by all the pupils! Thank you Blakehill for our ice creams too1
Sports Day arrived on one of the more blustery days in summer term but the children didn't mind and gave their best to all the events. Well done 3N!
In Science we have continued to learn all about light and shadows. It has been great to have so many sunny days where we have been able to conduct investigations and explore shadows outside! The children have really enjoyed this unit and already had a good basis of knowledge before we even started.
In Maths we have learnt all about Money recently. Pupils have enjoyed a trip to Nelson's Toyshop to buy some second hand toys. They used all four operations to help solve money problems.
In Music, the children have continued to learn the recorder! They have made a lot of progress!
What a day celebrating 50 years of Blakehill. The children enjoyed performances by classes, parades, ice creams, indoor activities and some live music for the afternoon. 3N did a brilliant performance of 'Waterloo'. Some of the pupils loved dressing in 1970s theme clothing also. Well done to all - a super day!
