Geography at Blakehill


At Blakehill we believe that all our children should be confident in the world around them and that this comes from having knowledge and skills to navigate it.

Our pupils will have hands on learning experiences which will develop knowledge and an interest in the people and places in our world. They will develop key geographical skills such as map work and fieldwork so that they can independently explore our planet.

We believe that through learning key facts about the places in our planet and using skills to explore what they look like our children will develop a thirst for exploring and protecting it.

In an ever changing world we constantly adapt and alter the way we teach our children so that they become people who apply their own ideas and thoughts to issues which affect their lives.


At Blakehill we give our children every opportunity to secure and build upon their geographical knowledge and skills. Our topics link from year group to year group and so with support from subject leaders and teachers, children transfer and develop understanding from one unit to the next. 

Children are taught skills and knowledge in line with the National Curriculum in Geography. From the start of their academic career, we teach the children fieldwork and navigation skills which enable them to explore their environment. This continues and is developed through their learning journey. 


We begin our Geography curriculum in Early Years by teaching our children a strong sense of where they live and go to school. They have lots of hands on learning to explore the immediate environment of our school. 

In Key Stage One, our children develop awareness of their locality and what our world looks like. They learn about key countries and cities in the UK and use maps to help them with this.

They learn key vocabulary such as continents, oceans and cities as well as locational words such as equator and North and South Pole in order to talk about this.

In Year 2 our children develop their understanding of their local area linking their geography learning with their history unit to explore Saltaire and carry out a local walk.

In Key Stage Two, children develop their knowledge of the United Kingdom, exploring human and physical features such as rivers, coasts and settlements. They also expand their learning of these features to Europe, North and South America.

They develop their map work using a range of different maps and learning key vocabulary such as North, South Hemisphere and Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. Children develop their ability to make comparisons between difference locations and notice how places change over time. By Year 6, children will be able to notice links and make connections between climate and location.


Throughout school, we underpin our geography curriculum with high quality trips which provide our children with the opportunity to develop their working geographically skills. Our children carry out learning walks around the local area using maps to navigate and make observations about human and physical features. In Years 4 and 5 our children attend residential trips to Nell Bank and Ingleborough. Here they experience contrasting localities and develop their comparison skills. In Year 6 our children visit Tropical world and Roundhay Park to apply their knowledge and carry out fieldwork comparing the difference between rainforests and deciduous forests.


Subject knowledge is assessed through pre and post learning tasks for each unit in addition to staff and pupil questionnaires and interviews. Children are given the opportunity to share what they know and think about the subject through class discussion and question and discussions with subject leads. In our planning, we listen to and respond to this feedback from our children in order to maintain a curriculum that is engaging and fills gaps in or extends the knowledge as they need it. 


We are proud of the geography work our children complete and regularly display their work on classroom boards, in floorbooks and on our class website areas. 


 We regularly review progress in Geography in line with National Curriculum objectives. We distinguish between knowledge and skills to ensure that progress in all areas is taking place. Teachers complete termly assessments to determine whether children are working within age expectations, above or below. This assessment informs class teachers and subject leads of the areas in which support is required to scaffold or develop learning.
