At Blakehill Primary School our vision is to design and create products to fit real life situations. We believe each child should be given the opportunity to use their imagination and creativity to plan and create designs that fit the wider world.

We want to teach children to be resourceful and use subjects across the curriculum to support their learning in design and technology, as well as solving problems and reflecting on their work, to ensure they make progress.
We believe we can shape children to develop a love of Design Technology and we are committed to providing children with the fundamental skills to help interest and support them for their future careers. We want to be part of creating the next generation of product designers, architects and graphic designers along with many other design careers. 

Or goal is to ensure all children are provided with a curriculum that stimulates their enjoyment of the subject and their curiosity in finding out how things are made. We want our children to be curious learners and have a say on the topics they would like to learn about.

We want children to develop a love of learning Design Technology by providing engaging and exciting lessons. 


At Blakehill we give our children every opportunity to develop and secure their understanding of design and technology. We follow the 4 step design process: design, make, evaluate and use technical knowledge to create products for a real life purpose. With support from the subject leader, teachers offer a curriculum which covers electrical systems, mechanisms, textiles, structures and cooking and nutrition over each term from year 1 to year 6.

Children are taught the skills in line with the National Curriculum in Design Technology. Early in their education journey with us, in Reception we teach the children skills for life such as gluing, cutting, sewing, chopping and mixing in every year group and the children learn how to use tools safely.

At Blakehill we encourage children to look at existing products to gauge an idea of products that are already available and how they work. This then leads children to base their ideas on what they have seen but use their imagination to change the product by adding their own twist.

Design- Children use a design model to note their ideas and begin to develop an understanding of how their product will look as a result of their ideas. Providing children with the time to look at existing products and planning their own design based on their research. Giving children access to the products in real life so that they can use their senses as well as researching online and in books.

Make– Making mistakes is a huge part of Design and Technology and fundamental element to their learning. Children will select a range of equipment and materials in order to create their product.

Evaluate – self reflecting on their product to ensure they have created their best piece of work. Looking at the product as a whole and including the positives and negatives of their product and comparing it to products that have already been produced. 

Technical Knowledge – building and using mechanisms and structures. Understanding and applying how electrical, mechanical and computing systems can work in their products.

Mechanisms, structures, textiles and cooking and nutrition are taught throughout the year in all year groups which are linked to other subjects and during whole school projects. In KS2, they are taught an addition element of DT which focuses on electrical systems. These are taught each term.
Opportunities for enhancing learning by using design and technology are always taken, therefore it is also taught alongside other curriculum subjects.

Subject knowledge has been ascertained through both pupil and staff questionnaires.
Children are given the opportunity to share what they already know about the subject through class discussion and questioning. As children move up through school they will enhance the skills they have already been taught through school. Their work, which is displayed in their topic books, floor books, displays, classrooms and the school website will show a progression of skills and knowledge.

The subject leader will lead up to date subject knowledge sessions as and when required to and will hold evidence of pupil work and staff training.


Progress in design and technology is regularly reviewed and inspected in accordance with the key objectives of the National Curriculum and our own assessment criteria to ensure that progression of skills is taking place. Teachers complete termly assessments to decide if children are at age-related expectations or working towards age-related expectations. This assessment will help teachers and the subject leader to provide support and differentiation (where needed) to ensure all children make progress. 

Through our Design and Technology curriculum, our children:

  • are enthusiastic about design and technology and talk highly about the subject and their work.
  • are confidently using design and technology terminology.
  • have the opportunity to create products in all elements of Design and Technology: textiles, structures and mechanisms, electrical systems, cooking and nutrition.
  • understand the process of designing and creating a product: design, make, evaluate, technical knowledge.
  • demonstrate clear progression in the skills required for design and technology, e.g. Textiles – progression in the type of stitch children are using.
  • are able to easily recall what they have done in design and technology and know the difference between Design Technology and Art.
