Physical Education (PE) at Blakehill

'Sport plays an important part in pupils’ development and there are extensive opportunities for pupils to take part in after-school coaching in a range of different sports.' (OFSTED, 2015)

Intent

At Blakehill Primary, we recognise the significant contribution of PE to the physical and mental health and well-being of all children. It is our intent to inspire an active generation who enjoy taking part in physical activity, working together as part of a positive team and encouraging each other to succeed. In addition, we believe that an innovative and varied PE curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of all children.

We are able to provide a safe and supportive environment for children to flourish in a range of different physical activities, which is essential in supporting their physical, emotional, spiritual, social and moral development.

Through the environment and curriculum we provide our pupils with, it is our intent that all children are physically literate by the time they leave Blakehill in Year 6.

Implementation

Our Physical Education curriculum has a skills based focus that provides children with the skills and knowledge to allow them to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.

By ensuring our children are able to access a curriculum that covers all areas of physical education, as set out in the National Curriculum, we able to accurately assess our children's abilities.

We provide a wide range of opportunities so that children are able to gain transferable skills for the five areas of activity (Games, Gymnastics, Dance, OAA and Swimming) as outlined in the Primary National curriculum for PE. Children are able to do this through their physical education and school sports offered after school.  Mrs Russell, who leads PE throughout school, works closely with all sports coaches and teachers to ensure a high quality curriculum is delivered to all children at Blakehill.

To help us provide high quality provision in both our physical education lessons and our school sports, our in house sports specialist, qualified coach and play worker work with staff and children across school developing PE lessons, mentoring staff and modelling best practice.

Impact
Physical education contributes directly to development of physical competence and fitness at Blakehill Primary School. It helps pupils to make informed choices and understand the value of leading a physically active lifestyle. The high quality physical education we offer has a positive impact on both academic learning and physical activity patterns of our pupils. We believe that a healthy, physically active pupil is more likely to be academically motivated, alert and successful in life skills.
