Summer 2

Hello RJ!

I hope you are all continuing to stay safe and are doing okay at home. Miss Hart and I are missing you all and cannot wait to see you again when it is safe to do so. Please continue to keep in touch with me either by emailing the school office: office@blakehill.bradford.sch.uk or via eschools. I love seeing your pictures, work and what you have been up to :)

Take care, Mrs Johnston x
Our topic for Summer 2 is the farm!

In school we would normally be learning all about living and growing. We would be visiting the farm and learning more about the different animals that live there.

Our book for this half term is 'What the Ladybird Heard' by Julia Donaldson. I'm sure lots of you have this at home but if not I have attached the youtube video below telling the story.

Before reading/listening to it, talk about what you already know about farms, who lives on a farm, what jobs might be done on a farm and what this story might be about.

If the children were in school I would make them write a list of what animals they can see using their fantastic phonics!

It would also be lovely to see the children making their own farm maps. They could make up their own and then write a list of instructions of how to steal the prize cow.

Writing

All sounds we learn in Reception have now been covered and we move into the teaching of phase 4 which is all about consolidation. The children need to be practising writing words which are phonetically plausible (e.g litl for little) and having a go at writing simple sentences. They also need to be practising writing words using digraphs and trigaphs and building up their writing stamina.

Reading

Keep practising reading books! We share lots of stories together in class and we talk about what we have read. Who is the author, who is the illustrator, what do you think the book could be about, what can you tell from the front cover, who are the characters in the story, where does the story take place, what happens in the story, what could happen next etc.

Keep practising tricky words and high frequency words. The children love listening to the tricky words song (both phase 2 and phase 3).

Maths

Every day try to spend time practising your counting.  We count forwards and backwards to 20 and also count in 2s and 10s. The children love singing the big numbers song (below).

In the Summer term we don’t introduce any new learning as we have already covered the main objectives but we embed the learning and try to get the children to develop a more secure understanding of what we have already learnt.

The packs that were available from the office at the beginning of this half term focused a lot on addition and number bonds to 10. This is something that we would have spent a lot of time embedding in school.
