RE at Blakehill Primary School 
 
RE has intrinsic academic value, developing pupils’ knowledge and understanding of the religions and beliefs which form part of contemporary society. While recognising and maintaining the distinctiveness of RE as a subject it can also make significant contributions to other parts of the school curriculum. It is important that teachers and pupils understand the major contribution that the subject makes to children and young people’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC) as well as personal development and citizenship. RE enables pupils to understand their place in a diverse society where people have differing ways of seeing and appreciating the world. Through exploration of their own beliefs and values and study of those of others, pupils learn respect for a range of religious and cultural views and are therefore able to play an active role in developing a cohesive and compassionate society
Intent
 
In accordance with the 1996 Education Act, Blakehill Primary School provides Religious Education (RE) for all pupils. RE is an important and fundamental part of the curriculum. We believe it is important for our children not only to learn about religion, but also, and perhaps more importantly, to learn from religion. We have high expectations of the quality of RE taught at Blakehill Primary School. RE is exciting and relevant to the lives of our pupils. We hope our commitment and enthusiasm as Governors and staff is communicated by the high priority we place on RE. We teach RE according to the LA’s Objectives. We study the six main religions in the UK – Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism and Sikhism. The school has a Christian ethos and as such Christianity is studied in every year group. To reflect the cultural diversity of Bradford, and to overcome some of the negative views portrayed in the media, Islam is covered in each Key Stage. 
 
We feel that the teaching of RE makes a distinctive contribution to the school curriculum as it allows all of our pupils to explore, understand and express their own response to spiritual and religious approaches to life through the study of Christian and the other five principal religions.

At Blakehill Primary, it has been agreed that having taken into account the requirements and guidelines presented in the Agreed Syllabus, the following religions have been selected for study: 

  • Christianity
  • Islam
  • Judaism
  • Hinduism  
  • Sikhism
  • Buddhism

 

As Christianity is the predominant religion in the school's pupil population and in the community surrounding the school, Christianity is the chosen faith for Progressed Study. 

There are no presumptions made as to the religious backgrounds and beliefs and values of the children and the staff.  We value the religious background of all members of the school community and hope that this will encourage individuals to share their own experiences with others freely.  All religions and their communities are treated with respect and sensitivity and we value the links, which are, and can be made between home, school, and a faith community.  We acknowledge that each religion studied can contribute to the education of all our pupils.  We promote teaching in Religious Education that stresses open enquiry and first-hand experiences wherever possible.

The agreed overview for the teaching RE is set out below. In each year group, the children will focus on studying aspects of 3 religions. RE is taught in each class but is also reinforced and enhanced through visitor, trips, assemblies and whole school topics. Every year group will have one trip to enhance the learning in RE.

Assessment criteria has been developed in line with the expectations laid out in the Agreed Bradford Syllabus, to enable teachers to assess the progress of the children as they move through the key stages. Termly summative assessments are used to determine the children’s’ understanding and inform teacher’s planning and further differentiated support for pupils.

IMPACT
At Blakehill Primary, we ensure that all pupils in our school are educated to develop spiritually, academically, emotionally and morally to enable them to better understand themselves and others and to cope with the opportunities, challenges and responsibilities of living in a rapidly changing, multicultural world.

The children at Blakehill Primary enjoy learning about other religions and why people choose, or choose not to follow a religion. Through their R.E. learning, the children are able to make links between their own lives and those of others in their community and in the wider world.  Through R.E. our children develop an understanding of other people’s cultures and ways of life, which they are then able to communicate to the wider community.

R.E. offers our children the means by which to understand how other people choose to live and to understand why they choose to live in that way. As such, R.E. is invaluable in an ever changing world.
