Progression of Skills

At Blakehill Primary, our PE curriculum is designed to allow children to build upon the skills and knowledge they develop each year and take them from specific skills based tasks to the application of skills in five areas of sports. 
 
In Key Stage 1, pupils develop their initial skills to become physically literate. This is then developed into Key Stage 2, where pupils apply their skills to sports and activities within the following 5 areas of sport: 

  • Games
  • Gymnastics
  • Dance
  • Athletics
  • OAA
Games 
Year 1
  • Develop the skills required to roll towards a target.

  • Further develop skills required to throw, bounce and catch between teammates.

  • Begin to lead others when appropriate.

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Year 4 (invasion games) 
  • Consistently use the necessary skills to maintain possession of a ball.
  • Understand and explore the concept of an invasion game.

  • Discuss and develop tactics of a game with teammates.

  • Compete with others in games or modified games.

  • Choose appropriate tactics to cause problems for the opposition.

  • Lead others and act as a respectful team member.

Year 6 (invasion games) 

  • Develop the appropriate passing skills to combine with team mates in a range of different invasion games. For example passing of rugby, netball, hockey.

  • Pass a ball to a partner/ team mate using a range of techniques.

  • Use different passing and moving skills to maintain possession.

  • Apply a variety of techniques when dribbling the ball with different equipment. For example, dribbling a hockey ball with a hockey stick, dribbling in basketball, dribbling with different parts of the foot in football.

  • Transfer skills into a range of invasion games.

Dance
Year 1
  • Copy and remember moves and positions 

  • Move with some control and coordination 

  • Link 2 actions to perform a sequence

  • Use movement to communication a mode, feeling or idea

Year 3
  • Plan, perform and repeat sequences.

  • Move with some fluency and expression.

  • Change speed and levels within a performance.

  • Create dances and movements around a given idea.

  • Begin to think about improving work.

  • Travel in a variety of ways.

  • Work with a partner to improve skills.

Year 5
  • Move in a clear, fluent and expressive manner.

  • Refine movements into sequences.

  • Create dances and movements that convey a definite idea.

  • Develop physical strength and suppleness by practising moves and stretching

Year 6
  • Perform complex moves that combine strength and stamina gained through gymnastics activities.

  • Perform and create complex sequences.

  • Express an idea in original and imaginative ways.
